THE ANKLE is a complex body part that plays a critical role in mobility and stability. Ankle pain may be due to sprains, arthritis, breaks and tendon problems.
THE FOREFOOT extends from the ball of the foot to the toes. Forefoot pain may be due to bunions, toe deformities and neuromas.
THE MIDFOOT runs from the ball of the foot to the heel and includes the arch. Midfoot pain may be due to arthritis or stress fractures.
THE HINDFOOT, also known as the heel, is the area between the ankle and the foot's arch. Heel pain may be due to plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendon problems.

Bio

Dr. Jan-Eric Esway is an orthopaedic surgeon and a leader in sports medicine and the latest methods of foot and ankle care. Since he began practicing medicine in 2000, he has helped thousands of patients enjoy greater comfort and flexibility.

Dr. Esway specializes in an array of minimially-invasive procedures. When compared to traditional surgical procedures, these techniques can produce superior results, including less scarring, reduced swelling, less pain, quicker recoveries and reduced chance of infection.

Education

As an undergraduate at Harvard University, Dr. Jan-Eric Esway majored in biology and graduated cum laude. He continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine where he became a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

After completing medical school, Dr. Esway completed a 5-year orthopaedic surgical residency at the University of Pittsburgh. As a resident, he studied under Dr. Freddie Fu, a world-renowned sports medicine surgeon, researcher and Pitt's head team physician. In addition, Dr. Fu was instrumental in developing the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sports Performance Complex, which is home to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Foot & Ankle Training

Dr. Jan-Eric Esway has completed extensive training in a comprehensive selection of foot and ankle conditions. Following his residency at UPMC, Dr. Esway pursued a fellowship with Dr. Michael Shereff, who previously served as President of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). During his fellowship, Dr. Esway also collaborated with Dr. Matison Boyer in writing several articles for peer-reviewed medical journals.

Dr. Esway is an active member of several prestigious medical associations.

Swimming Awards

Like many orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. Jan-Eric Esway was an avid athlete. He was a Junior National Champion swimmer and record-holder, which was recognized by Sports Illustrated. In addition, Dr. Esway was elected captain of Harvard's varsity swim team and received the Harold S. Ulen Award for leadership, sportsmanship and teamwork.

Dr. Esway is an ardent sports fan. He is most passionate about the Pittsburgh Steelers and the University of Pittsburgh's Panthers. In his spare time, he also enjoys fly-fishing, travelling and spending time with his family.
